OUR TEAM

Bringing together a team with decades of experience in the design, engineering and construction industry, we are committed to creating the next generation of sustainable buildings.

Matthew O’Malia

Founder

The Co-founder of OPAL Architecture, OPAL Build, GO Logic, and Timber HP, Matthew O’Malia is an entrepreneur and award-winning architect with a nationwide reputation for innovation and expertise in the design of high performance residential and institutional buildings. A leader in Passive House design in North America and named to Architect Magazine’s Architect 50 list in 2018, he is a frequent speaker at sustainable design conferences in the U.S. and abroad. Matthew has pursued a career based on exploration and innovation, working for architecture firms in New York and Frankfurt, where he gained a thorough understanding of German sustainable design and construction systems.

In a field with outsized impact on the environment, Matthew embraces innovation to address the pressing climate and resource challenges we face. His conception of developing the next generation of buildings that can help improve the environment is reflected in his work, which combines the highest levels of energy-performance and resource sustainability with aesthetic simplicity, clarity of form, and the capacity to spark delight.

Nick Farmer

President

The built environment contributes nearly 50% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with concrete and steel alone comprising 11% of that number. Nick's mission is to scale reliable, efficient, real time approaches that not only reduce the construction industry's carbon footprint, but benefit all players in the real estate ecosystem. Nick holds an MBA with a focus on real estate development and entrepreneurial finance from the University of Virginia, Darden School of Business and a BA from Muhlenberg College.

David Miller

Head of Construction

Dave’s passion for construction began nearly 30 years ago when he helped his father build his family house at the age of 14, and he has been building and renovating homes in Midcoast Maine ever since. While earning an Associate of Science degree from Unity College, a premier environmental institution, Dave developed an interest in sustainability and renewable energy that has shaped his career as a builder. After several years developing hard craftsmanship skills building and renovating luxury homes on Islesboro Island, Dave joined pioneering green building company GO Logic in 2007. At GO Logic, Dave developed deep expertise in sustainable construction practices, which led to the successful completion of the first-ever certified Passive House residence in Maine. Now at OPAL Build, Dave recently added to his list of firsts when he completed construction of the world’s first pre-insulated panelized cross-laminated timber (CLT) building in July 2021. Dave is excited to be part of the next generation of green building.

Cort Trejo

Project Manager

Purpose. Craft. Sustainability. Originally from CA, these qualities are what drew Cort to the Opal Build family and the east coast. After a degree in construction management, he spent five years managing custom code-built homes in Salt Lake City. When he happened upon the principles of Passive House, he was immediately drawn to the complexity and inherent opportunities that design/build/prefab offers in the high-performance space. Inspired by the ways of the historic master builder, he left the build scene momentarily to pursue a Masters in Architecture and explore ways to bring the philosophies of the design/build disciplines in closer harmony.

Cort and his wife Allison moved ‘sight unseen’ to the wild Maine coast with their 2 kids and joys of their life, Oaks + Poppy. They love exploring all that Maine has to offer, with the rugged coast, the local food scene, and the dark skies at the top of their list.

Nate Black

Structural Engineer / Head of DfMA

Nate started his engineering journey in Maine at UMO as a Mechanical Engineer and found his way to Structural by way spending a few years as a Forensic Engineer seeing what happens when things fail. Made the jump fully into structures enticed by timber framing, both by the craft and artistry of it and the robust nature of the structures. Timber framing led to panelization and deeper into more complex and structurally ambitious mass timber and hybrid structures. Years were spent honing histimber/panel engineering expertise, diving deep into BIM and advanced shop fabrication, the details and standards, refining the design and production process, and bringing up the next charge of timber engineers. Nate found Opal last year after a short stint with a large construction company who was working to bring mass timber into the multi-family realm. OPAL seemed primed to do just that. Interestingly one of the first CLT projects he  saw in their portfolio he had a part in the engineering/fabrication of years ago. Nate holds Professional Engineering licenses in ME, MA, NY, CT, RI, VT, NH, and FL.

Korina Buozys

Marketing Director

Korina holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She founded and ran a recycled accessories line before moving Maine to work on a sailboat. Her background in arts and design and a passion for sustainability and the environment led her to join Opal. Korina finds inspiration in the historic nature of homes as she and her husband restore their vintage rural farmhouse and in the wildness of Maine by sailing on Penobscot Bay.

We are looking for teammates who share our passion for creating the next generation of sustainable buildings.
